Miles about to expire? 5 ways to save their value
Many frequent flyers only notice shortly before that their balance is expiring. Rules differ by program – and there are several ways to still use the value.
Check your program's expiry rule
Some programs expire miles after a fixed term, others only after a period without account activity. The exact rule is in the program terms and often in your statement. The Loyalty Hub summarises key facts per program.
Your options
Check the options in this order – not all are available for every program.
- Trigger account activity (e.g. partner spend) if the program counts activity
- Redeem an award flight or upgrade yourself
- Pool miles within the family where allowed
- Sell on MilesMarket – via transfer or award ticket depending on the program
- Merchandise only as a last resort: usually low value
Act in time
A sale needs time for verification, finding a buyer and delivery. So don't start in the final week. The calculator gives you a rough value up front.
